Slender Tree-ferns; where it all began

All stories have a beginning.

For us, it was the discovery of Slender Tree-ferns in the properties neighbouring a logging coupe, and then the discovery that there were over seventy of these Critically Endangered Tree-ferns within the logging coupe land itself.

These rare tree ferns were the start of our journey.

We now understand that just because a piece of land has been labeled 'plantation' doesn't mean that it does not contain numerous rare and threatened species that need our protection.

Since our discoveries in early 2024, we have been working together as a small team to advocate for proper protections for these beautiful Slender Tree-ferns as well as the Cool Temperate Rainforest and damp wet tall forests that they are found in.

It has not been a straight forward journey.

We have been down regulatory rabbit holes only to find that legislative protections seem to be dead ends or giving an illusion of protection but we haven't given up.

The Forest Stewardship Council offers good protections for these rare and threatened species but compliance and enforcement is less than we would like.  Again, we are working hard to demand for better compliance and protections.

In the meanwhile, we are building a wonderful community of like minded nature lovers and making good friends along the journey.

We had fun making this with up and coming film maker Cam Myers...

A Slender chance in Fellas coupe

Slender tree-ferns need large buffers of native forest and native vegetation as they are:

  • Fire sensitive. Plantations close to Slender tree-ferns increase the risk of them being killed by fire.
  • Tall and fragile, easily damaged by trees that fall into the gullies and creeks along logging boundaries. Without the protection of the surrounding forest the trees on the edge are uprooted and fall into the gullies when they are exposed to wind.
  • Reliant upon wet and moist conditions in the gullies for their survival.
  • A Cool Temperate Rainforest species, needing filtered light and cool protected conditions to thrive.
